How to Keep Creativity Alive

How to Keep Creativity Alive

In moments where writer's block seems unending, count on these tips to get your creativity flowing again.Writers make money by using their creativity to craft written material. When creativity fades and writer's block sets in (as is bound to happen), it's time for a brain reset. Here are three creativity-zapping scenarios and ways to power through them.

Too Much of a Good Thing

Scenario One: Your writing dashboard is maxed out with five jobs, and each entails writing seven product descriptions in the same apparel catalog. Seven multiplied by five equals 35 descriptions of shirts and pants. You feel defeated before you begin!

Repetition can kill creativity, but it doesn't have to. It's all in your perspective. Instead of focusing on writing 35 descriptions, focus on your opportunity to make X dollars by completing five jobs. Break each job into manageable chunks. If the jobs are due in five days, commit to writing one per day. Each day, commit to writing three descriptions in the morning, two at midday and two before bed. Don't try to crank out all 35 in one session.

Itchy Trigger Finger

Scenario Two: In your quest to beat other writers, you snagged a job you're qualified for but aren't interested in. You could let it expire, but you don't want to jeopardize your reputation for reliability.

Few things dampen creativity more than dull subject matter. While some articles flow effortlessly from your fingertips, others -- like that blog post you claimed about battery acid -- will be tougher. View the latter jobs as opportunities to expand your knowledge base. Research your topic and focus on the facts you're soaking up. There's a good chance they'll come in handy for future assignments.

You've Become Motivationally Challenged

Scenario Three: Working from home is great, especially since you can work in your PJs. On many days, you're still wearing them at 3 p.m. The problem is that you're in the office, but your brain's not in the game.

Experiences and interactions recharge your brain, boost your mood, energize you and fuel ideas. An occasional PJ day is fine; just don't make it the norm. Vow to get dressed and leave the house most days. Take a walk, hit the gym or meet a friend for lunch. Leaving your desk won't hinder your productivity -- it will help it.

If you catch yourself searching Facebook for old friends or reading about Bruce Jenner's latest manicure, it's time to get up and get out. Similarly, make your home office an appealing place to be. Supercharge it with color, bring in some plants, post inspirational quotes where you can see them and, above all, stay organized.
